Visit Shearwater
A vibrant community on Denny Island, is just a short distance from Old Bella Bella. Originating as a Royal Canadian Air Force base in 1941 for WWII central coast patrols, it once hosted over 1000 residents and remained active until 1944. The community's name honors the HMS Shearwater, a Royal Navy vessel that patrolled the B.C. coast from 1902 to 1915 before joining the Royal Canadian Navy, reflecting its rich military heritage and historical significance.

Perfect for those looking to enrich their "Life List," guided birding tours offer an enhanced experience by spotlighting diverse species and leading visitors to the best birdwatching locales.

-
Namu
At the junction of the Burke Channel and Fitz Hugh Sound, 95 km southwest of Bella Coola, lies Namu—meaning ‘whirlwind’ in the Heiltsuk First Nations language. Now a mostly abandoned community, Namu was once a bustling hub from the 1930s to the 1980s, with B.C. Packers operating a cannery that supported up to 400 workers. Due to high transportation costs and low fish prices in the 1980s, the cannery shifted to fish processing, and the town's decline began. B.C. Packers sold Namu in the early 1990s, and an attempt to establish a resort failed. Today, Namu is visited by coastal travelers and fishermen, and its ancient shell midden attracts archaeologists.

-
Ocean Falls
Once a bustling company town revolving around a pulp and paper mill, its rich history echoes through its charming streets and rustic architecture. The hydro dam was completed to create Link Lake in 1912, and the mill started producing pulp and paper. The dam was built to run the generators that powered the sawmill and paper mill, and it is still in place with two of the generators continuing to make power. Despite the decline in population following the mill's closure, Ocean Falls remains a hidden gem for adventurers seeking solace in nature's embrace. With abundant opportunities for fishing, hiking, and wildlife encounters, it's a haven for those seeking the untamed beauty and tranquility this stunning location has to offer.
